Copycat drawing is an activity of copying other people's sketches or pictures of designs that already exist. Trough this activity, I was able to improve various skills for drawing cars such as proportional sketch, line weighing and understanding reflections on surfaces. The first car I started with was a hatchback type car called Mazda 3. Material used for these drawings was Prismacolor wax pencil. Professional designers use a lot of useful techniques to describe forms, and line weighing is one of the most useful techniques to present your design effectively. Additionally, line weighing is not only used for car design but also normally used in the other sectors such as engineering and architecture drawings to communicate with the complexed forms. Today, I will suggest how you can use heavy lines in a drawing to help in improving the quality of the sketch and visualise your idea effectively. Proportion is one of the most fundamental factors when you draw or design a car. No matter what design you make, these certain basic proportions have to be promised and followed. Proportion is basically defined as a relationship of shapes concerned with scale and size in a design. Knowing how to use proportions in car design is useful as it helps to make steps to draw with ease and concrete the concept of the vehicle you are designing. When you find the harmonious proportions, you are able to deliver the concept of your design effectively and create something which we call beautiful design. Depending on the type of vehicle, proportions vary. Speed sketching and proportion Speed sketching is one of the most fundamental skills that professional designers must possess. This is because designers aim to visualise their thoughts immediately on paper as they have to take into account their customer's feedback regardless of their nature. This feedback influences changes or improvements in a design. One of the tasks we were given at the beginning of the course was to draw shoes we were wearing. We were all taken aback by this unexpected task. It might seem funny drawing shoes in an automotive design course. However, shoes are one of the closest form of transport to us. On this task, we were asked to make multiple shoe drawings in limited times. The drawings had to be drawn with decent proportion. The shoes I used for the drawings were Lacoste and Timberland boots.
